i think knowing people who know people (who know people, etc.) is one of the best ways. social contact and trying to spread what you make as good and as quickly as possible. you have to show what you can do.
i moved to another city to study, but i didn't know anyone around so i kinda stayed in my room to just work. my bro, who'll start doing composition (music-ish-things) next year in the same city, decided - since he needs the same social contact and "the knowing a lot of people" - that we'll have to build up a proper social contact in that city. guess that means i'll get some extra beers at local pubs. :> just show what you can do to as many people as you can. (=

entering contests will help too. and things like getting featured, clubs, etc.

hope that makes a bit of sense. :3
