Alcohol is a factor in a big number of deaths in Australia as well as anywhere in the world. Whether is be vehicular, assault or just stupid behaviour, alcohol definitely plays it's part in helping those things become fatal.
While I don't drink myself, I'm not oblivious to what goes on around me. Too many times have I see stupid and potentially dangerous actions from under-age or Eighteen to Twenty year olds whilst they've been under the influence. Having those few more years of maturity could be all the difference between life and death in some circumstances.
It could be a double edged sword in a way though. If Australia did change it to Twenty One, I think a lot of under-age teenagers would still be drinking. Even encourage them is some cases, since they have to wait those extra three years just to get on the piss. It would be hard to change any law in Australia now with any effect. You can see how easily under-age teenagers can get their hands on alcohol today, I don't think much would change if the law was changed to Twenty One.
